Introduction to the Partnership

TIER IV, a well-known provider of open-source autonomous driving technology, has announced a remarkable partnership with Axell Corporation, a Japan-based computer hardware company. Together, they are working on a collaborative research project focused on creating a new application-specific system-on-chip (SoC) and software platform for autonomous vehicles.

The Project: SoC and Software Platform

The project has already culminated in a demonstration that showcased the power and performance advantages of the Autoware Accelerators. These hardware accelerators, which are custom-designed for the Autoware architecture, play a vital role in this new system.

Funded by the “Innovative AI Chip and Next-Generation Computing Technology Development” project, sponsored by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), this collaboration seeks to push the boundaries of autonomous driving technology.

Power Performance: The Autoware Accelerators

The Autoware Accelerators have been specifically designed to expertly manage high-load sensor data processing. They achieve close to a tenfold reduction in power consumption compared to existing environments. These advantages are integral to the success of the project and highlight the innovation possible with advanced hardware systems like hardware accelerators.

The New SoC and Robo-Taxi System Development

The newly developed SoC integrates seamlessly with Autoware, a widely acclaimed open-source software championed by TIER IV. Optimized to execute diverse AD algorithms with exceptional efficiency, the SoC sets the stage for a complete Robo-Taxi system with an estimated power consumption of less than 150W.

According to the press release, “With its focus on AI edge computing, the SoC aims to provide more efficient and reliable AD functions.” The system also features a dedicated real-time operating system (RTOS) that mitigates fluctuations in execution time, thereby enhancing overall reliability.

A significant step forward…

The partnership between TIER IV and Axell Corporation represents a significant step forward in the field of autonomous driving technology. By leveraging cutting-edge hardware and software solutions, they are paving the way for more sustainable and efficient transportation systems.
