Introducing the New ‘Honda 0 Series’

Jan 9  – Japanese automotive giant, Honda Motor (7267.T), has announced a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) sector with its plans to launch the ‘Honda 0 Series’, a new lineup of electric cars, commencing in 2026. This move symbolizes Honda’s commitment to transitioning towards more sustainable, battery-powered transportation solutions.

Catching Up in the EV Race

Despite its status as Japan’s second-biggest car manufacturer, Honda has experienced a slower transition to EVs compared to European and U.S. rivals like General Motors (GM.N) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE). Additionally, the company faces rising competition from newer entrants like China’s BYD (002594.SZ).

However, with the unveiling of the ‘Honda 0 Series’ and two concept models at the CES trade show in Las Vegas, Honda is poised to accelerate its pace in the EV market. This series is a bold statement in Honda’s mission to have battery-powered and fuel-cell vehicles comprise all of its new car sales by 2040.

The Global Launch: Starting with North America

The ‘Honda 0 Series’ is set to make its debut globally, beginning in the North American market. Details about the series, such as pricing or the number of models, are yet to be disclosed. However, Honda executives, during a media briefing in Tokyo prior to the announcement, highlighted the 2026 target for the rollout of the first models.

Honda’s Current EV Market Footprint

Battery-powered vehicles currently represent less than 0.5% of Honda’s worldwide sales, which total about 2.8 million cars over the first nine months of 2023. Out of these, approximately 11,000 vehicles are electric, with a significant portion, around 93%, being sold in China. Interestingly, none have been sold in North America yet, which makes the planned launch of the ‘Honda 0 Series’ in this region all the more strategic.

Conclusion

Honda’s leap into the EV market with its ‘Honda 0 Series’ is more than just an expansion of its product line; it represents a significant shift in the company’s approach to sustainable transportation. As the world increasingly turns towards eco-friendly options, Honda’s initiative is a promising sign of the automotive industry’s commitment to a greener future.
