SEATTLE, WA – Boeing, one of the top two global aerospace leaders, and Shield AI (artificial intelligence software company), announced in early March 2023 an ambitious partnership aimed at integrating AI and autonomous technologies (driverless/robotic vehicle) into Boeing’s aircraft systems.
This innovative collaboration, set to commence immediately, is expected to revolutionise the aviation industry and military sector, offering unprecedented levels of efficiency and safety in aircraft and defence operations.
“Today marks a milestone in Boeing’s history as we join forces with Shield AI to pioneer the next generation of aviation technology,” said Leanne Caret, CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security. “Our collaboration represents a significant stride towards a future where AI and autonomy are integral parts of all facets of aviation.”
The partnership is expected to yield numerous benefits. Through the utilisation of Shield AI’s expertise in self-driving software, Boeing aims to significantly enhance the performance and safety of its aircraft carriers. The integration of AI technology promises to reduce the risk of human error, which is a leading component of aviation accidents. Furthermore, the advancements are expected to streamline flight operations, potentially saving billions of dollars in fuel and maintenance costs annually. From a military defence benefit, the involvement of AI systems, reduces the threat to the life of pilots in war zone settings, as the introduction of AI pilots minimises the requirement of a human pilot being present in the cockpit, as the aircraft is able to operate autonomously under Shield AI network systems.
Controversially, the partnership has the potential to increase the job displacement automation industry, impacting pilots and other aviation workers. Equally, ensuring the security of AI systems against potential cyber-attacks is a crucial avenue to manage and consider as the risk of interference from opposing threats, magnifies when operations are managed and handled digitally and remotely through network or data system rather than manual procedure.
Despite these challenges, both Boeing and Shield AI are optimistic about the partnership’s potential to drive innovation in the aviation industry. Shield AI’s co-founder and CEO, Ryan Tseng, stated, “This collaboration presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of aviation. Together with Boeing, we are committed to advancing technologies that increase safety, efficiency, and reliability in aviation.”
